Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to present the efforts of the Commission on Ethnography, operating within the structures of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Polish Academy of Sciences, to gain independence. Its fate was largely intertwined with the history of the discipline, today most often referred to as cultural anthropology, and formerly more commonly known as ethnography and ethnology. Although the Commission on Ethnography is mentioned in publications on the history of Polish ethnography/ ethnology and folklore studies, the history of this body has not been sufficiently researched and remains largely unknown. The literature lacks both a description of the circumstances surrounding the separation of the Commission on Ethnography from the Commission on Anthropology of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1926 and its fate in the period immediately after the Second World War. The context of its establishment in 1973 within the structures of the Polish Academy of Sciences, as well as its subsequent transfer (2011) to the reactivated Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, also remains unknown. Our intention is not to meticulously reconstruct the historical activities of the Commission, but rather to draw attention to the arduous path of ethnography/ ethnology towards the autonomy of the discipline by describing its fate within the indicated institutions.
