Summary/Abstract: The background of the conflict taking place in the Vistula basin before about 1100 is not often seen in religious divisions. Usually, we see such a background in the dynastic ambitions of the Piasts and the pretenders to their power. Meanwhile, a careful reading of the chronicles, the Polish Anonymus called Gallus, the Czech Cosmas, as well as individual sources of East Frankish and Ruthenian provenance, indicates inter-religious differences as a factor generating political, and de facto civilisational conflict precisely on the Vistula. Thanks to the records of Brunwilarensis monasterii fundatorum actus, we can assume that it was a Latin-Cyrillo-Methodean conflict. It was probably the background of the clashes that took place on Polish lands in 996, 1036, 1047. If we correctly refer to the Hungarian-Polish memory of “King Casimir, whom they betrayed and shamefully killed”, preserved by the Chronicle, to the murder of Casimir the Restorer by the Cracovians, we will be able to postulate a clash of civilizations on the Vistula also in 1058. This reminds us that professors W. Sobieski, H. Paszkiewicz, and K. Lanckorońska, among others, saw in just such an interdenominational conflict the background of the clash between another Cracovian, Bishop Stanisław, and another Piast, who was also a great supporter of Rome – Bolesław the Generous. All this justifies the conclusion that the Latin-Cyrillo-Methodean conflict was the axis of early Polish history, and the Piast dynasty dominion was a bi-confessional state at least until 1047, and perhaps even until the war declared by voivode Sieciech against the Piasts party in the years 1099–1100.
