Summary/Abstract: We hope this paper makes a significant contribution to evaluating the social basis of the news, the building blocks of digital culture, and the changing nature of media practice. Matheson uncovers the social basis of the news, explores the role of the news in perpetuating or challenging that social base, and describes the power of the news to convince and manipulate. Deuze discusses the building blocks of digital culture on the basis of contemporary discussions about (online) journalism, blogging, and open publishing. Sheridan Burns argues that today’s news values are directly tied to the demographic profile of the target audience.
