Summary/Abstract: The paper generates insights about the formal institutions of representative democracy, the globalization of democracy, the problems of democratizing the transnational polity, and the conditions facilitating democratic rule. In this paper I am particularly interested in the legitimacy of constitutional democracy, the role of judicial power, the structures of modern democratic societies, and the doctrine of separation of powers.
