Summary/Abstract: 139 years. This is the period of time Szathmari’s photographs were lost (between 1854 and 1993). There were international references: books, articles, studies, chronographs that stated Carol Szathmari as the first war photographer in the world, but there were no images to prove it. The Romanian researchers (C. Savulescu, G. Oprescu, A.-S. Ionescu and others) tried for years to find out where these material evidences might be. Carol Szathmari was a prominent personality of his time. Not only a very good painter, a pioneer of photography and the first world’s war feature reporter, but a person who spoke fluently 11 foreign languages, an artist agreed by 5 Romanian princes as the official artist of the Royal Court and the winner of numerous international medals and distinctions.
