Summary/Abstract: The novel Pasurile unui american în România [The Misfortunes of An American Traveller in Romania] was written by Nicolae Xenopol when he was only 21 years old and was published in instalments (November 1879–August 1880) in the journal Convorbiri literare (Literary Dialogues). The writers turns to a method already used by other writers, to bring fictitious characters on the stage, as with the American journalist Blackwurst Johnson and his servant, John; he can actually use such characters to freely talk about the Romanian society at the onset of the 19th century.
