Summary/Abstract: This essay is a response to Karl Jaspers’ discussion on theories of guilt in the aftermath of the Second World War. Jaspers divides guilt into a four types, and hopes to show that Germans share in the guilt of the war and the Holocaust in some way. However, by dividing guilt as he does, he also provides a method of avoiding guilt. The author’s goal is to identify the problems with Jaspers’ categories and to propose a solution.
