Summary/Abstract: Hüseyinzâde Ali Bey was an important thinker, politician and artist who was influential in Azerbaijan and Ottoman geography in the 19th and 20th centuries. His world of thought was shaped on the axis of Turkism, Islamism and modernization, and he made an effort to build a modern society by harmonizing these concepts with each other. The slogan “Turkization, Islamize, Modernization” formed the basis of his intellectual understanding and he emphasized the importance of education, culture and politics for social transformation in line with these principles. As a person who led the modernization movements in the Ottoman Empire and Azerbaijan, Hüseyinzade defended the preservation of traditional values while at the same time asserting that Western science and technology should be utilized. His conception of nationalism was shaped by the effort to strengthen individual and social identity and aimed at the unity of the Turkic world. In this article, the intellectual legacy of Hüseyinzade Ali Bey is examined and his understanding of Turkish-Islamic modernization, education and cultural policies and nationalist thought are discussed. This multidimensional analysis of Hüseyinzade Ali Bey's intellectual legacy offers an original and holistic contribution to the existing literature.
