The Techniques of Gold Work Embroidery in Azerbaijan

Summary/Abstract: Embroidery has traditionally been one of the main occupations of women in Azerbaijan, and among its various forms, gold work embroidery stands out for its brilliance, elegance, and luxury. This unique art form is richly represented in the Ethnography Fund of the National Museum of the History of Azerbaijan, which preserves numerous examples of embroidered items. Gold work embroidery was typically applied to expensive fabrics and used in decorating small household items. These pieces reveal a variety of stitching techniques, with threads attached to the fabric in different methods—many of which can be visually distinguished in the museum’s collection. For the first time, the article presents a new classification of these sewing methods. Gold embroidery not only served as decoration but also reflected the aesthetic taste, cultural values, and social roles of women. Though it held a significant place among domestic professions during the Middle Ages, it has gradually lost relevance in modern times. Nevertheless, the study of this art reveals deep insights into the worldview, lifestyle, and even the mythological beliefs of ancient Turkic peoples. As a part of both national heritage and global artistic traditions, gold work embroidery remains a meaningful expression of creativity and identity.
