Errors and Deviations from the Original Greek Text in Dionysius’s Translation of the Homilies against the Anomoeans by St John Chrysostom

Summary/Abstract: The article excerpts and systematizes the errors and deviations from the original Greek text in the Middle Bulgarian translation of the Homilies against the Anomoeans by St John Chrysostom, translated into Old Bulgarian by the arguably best translator of the 14th century Tarnovo Literary School, Dionysius Divniy. The linguistic material is organized into the following groups and subgroups: I. Errors that radically change the meaning of the original text. II. Partial deviations from the original text. 1. Not particularly successful transformations of the original text. 2. Deviations due to a creative attitude towards the original text. 3. Grammatical changes and categorical transformations, providing information about the idiolect of the scholar. The examples from each group are peculiar linguistic markers that could serve to establish the authorship of anonymous translations, constituting the vast majority of texts in the Slavic manuscript tradition. The study confirms the observations of other researchers that medieval translators worked with a reader, since a large part of the errors were made due to an auricularly poorly perceived Greek text or as a result of a coincidence in the pronunciation ofdiphthongs and monophthongs. In addition, some deviations indicate that it is likely that Dionysius Divniy sometimes used an assistant in the scriptorium, writing down the text dictated by the translator. The errors made, which are a consequence of a visually poorly perceived text, indicate that the codex from which it was translated had certain defects and therefore was not particularly readable in some places.
