Summary/Abstract: The text discussed in the current article is referred to as the synaxarium in the Greek tradition and the prolog text in the Slavic tradition. The synaxarium or prolog text typically presents a short version of the content of a prolonged hagiographical work dedicated to a saint, viz. a Passion, Life or Acts, or a feast day of the church calendar. The focus of attention is on the prolog text of St Thecla, as preserved in the collection otherwise known as the Plain (or Prost) Prolog in the South Slavic transmission. The earliest textual transmission of this short hagiographical text is investigated. After a brief introduction to the broader topic, a textual and text-critical analysis are presented. A general assessment of the text in its context is provided, including its relation to the Greek source text material, and secondary readings and textual developments in the Slavic transmission are discussed.
