Summary/Abstract: The paper examines journalistic due care as both a journalistic and a legal standard in the field of public information. The first part discusses the practical and ethical aspects of this standard, including source verification, editorial procedures, and the challenges of the digital environment. The second part analyzes the legal aspect of journalistic due care through Article 9 of the Law on Public Information and Media and its role in assessing a journalist’s conscientious conduct. The third part outlines the criteria developed by the European Court of Human Rights under Article 10 of the European Convention, with particular attention to good faith, fact-checking, and the requirement of a sufficient factual basis. The final section presents an analysis of eleven judgments of the Belgrade Court of Appeal in media-related disputes in which the standard of journalistic due care was applied. The paper highlights the points of convergence between domestic and European criteria, while also emphasizing the need for a more consistent application of professional standards in media practice.
