LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN AND THE MISSA SOLEMNIS IN THE CLASSROOM: INNOVATIVE APPROACHES TO TEACHING AND UNDERSTANDING MUSIC

Summary/Abstract: Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) is recognized as a titan of music, and his oeuvre, in its entirety, has become a shared spiritual heritage of humanity. Beethoven’s mode of expression, viewed through the lens of the structural periodic model, both reflects and advances the history of this morphological unit. While any attempt to systematize Mozart’s periodic thinking may appear difficult or even impossible, in Beethoven’s case such an endeavor proves highly revealing: he begins from the premises of symmetry but transcends them, integrating elaborate melodic figures and atypical constructions that give rise to new and profoundly expressive musical forms. For Beethoven, the thematic idea remains the highest priority, with formal structure entirely subordinated to its expressive power. In a contemporary pedagogical framework, teaching the Missa Solemnis offers not only the opportunity to explore a fundamental moment in the history of music but also to engage with humanistic values of enduring relevance: the dialogue between tradition and innovation, the tension between individual and community, and the search for spiritual meaning through art. Innovative teaching methods—centered on guided listening, creative activities, and interdisciplinary connections (music, history, philosophy, religion, literature, and the visual arts)—can facilitate students’ access to the complexity of this masterpiece. In this way, Beethoven emerges not only as a historical figure of the past but also as a living interlocutor, capable of inspiring and challenging present and future generations.
