The Effect of Locus of Control on Job Satisfaction and Life Satisfaction: A Study on Public Officials

Summary/Abstract: Purpose – This study aims to examine the impact of public officials’ locus of control perceptions on job satisfaction and life satisfaction, as well as to determine the relationship between these variables. Design/methodology/approach – This study was conducted using the relational survey model, which is one of the quantitative research methods. The research data were obtained through a survey administered to 347 employees working in public institutions in Afyon province. Correlation and regression analyses were performed to test the research hypotheses. Findings – As a result of the analyses conducted, a statistically significant relationship was found between participants' general locus of control and internal locus of control with job satisfaction and life satisfaction. Additionally, a significant relationship was identified between external locus of control and life satisfaction, as well as between job satisfaction and life satisfaction. However, no statistically significant relationship was found between external locus of control and job satisfaction. According to the findings of the regression analysis, it was determined that participants' overall perception of locus of control had a significant effect on job satisfaction but not on life satisfaction; that their perception of internal locus of control had a significant effect on job satisfaction but not on life satisfaction; and that their perception of external locus of control had no significant effect on either job satisfaction or life satisfaction. Discussion – Considering the organisational and individual gains of having a high internal locus of control, the importance of locus of control in business and social life emerges. Specifically, in terms of job success, the belief that individuals' achievements depend on their own efforts and that they can control the outcomes may influence job satisfaction. On the other hand, the projection of these effects can be seen in the social lives of individuals. In addition, the individual achievements of employees with high job satisfaction and life satisfaction will contribute positively to the success of organisations. Especially in public organisations, a high of internal locus of control-job satisfaction relationship will create a better source of motivation and increase the quality of public services.
