Summary/Abstract: The present article attempts to analyse one of the characteristic features of South Korean melodramatic serials – the constant repetition of the same mise en scene, gestures, objects and natural phenomena during the development of the storylines related to the romantic relationships between the characters. The recurring cinematic images, elements and mise-en-scenes in South Korean melodramatic series are the object of this study. The hypothesis is that they are persistent tropes marking obligatory narratives, making these k-dramas canonical. All of this is necessary to build a formula of their own that is novel and does not copy Western television products. This is needed to attract viewers who find satisfaction and a sense of security in familiar tropes.
