Bearers of the Song Tradition in Záhorie Documented by Karol Plicka

Summary/Abstract: Karol Plicka (1894–1987) documented traditional singing in the Záhorie region following his arrival in Slovakia in the 1920s. His manuscript collection of Slovak folk songs comprises 751 songs from nine locations in Záhorie (Borský Mikuláš, Borský Svätý Peter, Čáčov, Čáry, Jablonica, Kuklov, Moravský Svätý Ján, Osuské, and Rozbehy). Within this corpus, we identified 97 singers from across all age groups, including 64 women and 33 men. The song repertoire points to several types of tradition bearers, ranging from common singers to exceptional singer personalities, of whom there may have been several ones within a family. Plicka regarded elder women as the most reliable bearers of the song tradition. One such personality was the singer Eva Studeničová from the village of Moravský Svätý Ján. He was particularly struck by the breadth of her repertoire, her strong focus on narrative song genres, and her refined ornamental vocal style, which was already in decline in Záhorie at that time.
