Safe Journalism? The Specific Nature of Threats in the Journalistic Profession from Women’s Perspective

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to identify the manifestations and determinants of security in the journalistic profession from women’s perspective. Including a gender perspective in the analysis also makes it possible to address the issue of equality within the profession. The article assumes that threats in journalism may affect both men and women; however, because gender inequalities persist, the identified threats are more likely to affect women. To verify this hypothesis, the study employed a comparative method, critical source analysis and in-depth interviews. The findings made it possible to identify the main threats to security in the journalistic profession, encompassing physical and psychological as well as socio-economic security. The research revealed existing gender-related inequalities in this area, with women journalists experiencing a higher incidence of the identified threats, although this is also linked to the type of threat involved.
