Summary/Abstract: The formation of the Soviet montage school in cinema is examined in the context of the legacy of pre-revolutionary Russian cinema and in connection with the principles of the avant-garde that emerged before the October Revolution. The montage principle is viewed as a central method of the avant-garde. In film, Sergei Eisenstein and Dziga Vertov developed this approach as a means to move beyond conventional narrative and create metaphorical references that transcend traditional storytelling.
