Summary/Abstract: The establishment of the National Folklore Ensemble “Philip Kutev” marked the beginning of a period of rapid development in vocal-instrumental folk music. This growth was further supported by the emergence of other folklore ensembles in Bulgaria, whose repertoire- comprising authentic, arranged, and original pieces—contributed to exploring the potential of Bulgarian folk instruments. The current form of instrumental groups, orchestras, ensembles, and others has evolved significantly from their origins in the 1930s and 1940s. The kaval, in particular, plays a central role in this development. This report focuses not only on the role of the kaval but also on the evolution of its music, from folk song accompaniment to the most contemporary instrumental melodies.
