Summary/Abstract: Rural tourism, as a form of special interest tourism, encompasses various activities conducted in rural areas, offering tourists experiences rooted in the natural, cultural, and social characteristics of these regions. It emphasizes the preservation of the natural environment, cultural heritage, and authentic experiences, including agritourism, ecotourism, and activities closely tied to the local way of life, such as visits to local farms and participation in traditional events. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and synthesize existing knowledge on the specificities of rural areas, explore the characteristics of tourism in these regions, and understand the challenges of sustainable rural tourism development. Sustainable rural tourism development faces numerous challenges, including the need to conserve natural resources, protect cultural heritage, and ensure that the economic benefits of tourism remain within the local community.
