Summary/Abstract: This article aims to outline the core competencies of a project manager in the context of project management in educational institutions. For this purpose, an attempt has been made to define the approaches to project management and outline the relationship between them, as well as to examine the specifics of project management in the context of the PMI (Project Management Institute) and IPMA (International Project Management Association) and the competencies required according to them. On this basis, important competencies for project management in the preschool education system are outlined. The research is subordinated to the main thesis, which states that the high degree of competence of the head of the educational institution for project management predetermines wider project perspectives for the organization. Through the methods of content analysis of scientific publications, comparative analysis of methodologies, induction and deduction for the formation of findings, conclusions and recommendations, the view is also reached that the system and competence approaches are complementary and their integration in the educational institution is important for the expansion of the portfolio of project opportunities.
