Summary/Abstract: The shortage of medicines, not only in Europe but also worldwide, was identified long before the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the problem to such an extent that it became a central issue for the responsible institutions at the level of the European Union. The pandemic has resulted in critical shortages of certain medicines due to disrupted supply chains, which have proven to be the „Achilles' heel“. The shortage of medicines (the object of this paper) and the reasons that provoked it (as the subject of the same) serve as a starting point in the research, in pursuit of answers related to possible solutions to overcome and, above all, prevent similar precedents in the future (the aim of the paper). The thesis of this study is that, in addition to the introduction of structural measures guaranteeing the long-term security and sustainability of the supply of medicines, the idea of a new EU strategic approach to the subject is also required as an inevitable solution, and this in the context of a highly dynamic, constantly changing and increasingly socio-economic and political environment.
