Modular typefaces and parametric design

Summary/Abstract: The following article explores modular type through the paradigm of parametric design and information systems. Based on a historical review of existing types and practices a new, broader and more unambiguous definition of a modular type design is proposed, which helps in forming an uninterrupted tradition of modular design practices in the history of type design. The broader definition, based on the postulated principle of “reduction of complexity” offers a new look on typefaces and type systems of the past, as well as potential strategies and research venues in the practices of parametric type design based on historic precedents.
