Summary/Abstract: The portrayal of Michael the Brave as the unifier of the three Romanian Principalities and, through this, as a symbol of the Romanians’ struggle for national unity and independence is carried out by the representatives of the Transylvanian School. The Transylvanian School represents the cultural movement within the broader sphere of the German Enlightenment (“Aufklärung”), having as its main objective the social and political emancipation of the Romanians in Transylvania through the submission of petitions to the Viennese Court (Supplex Libellus Valachorum – 1791) and the publication of works of historical and philological character that bring arguments in support of the thesis that the Romanians are the descendants of the colonists brought by Emperor Trajan to Dacia. This thesis is also known as Latinism.
