Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the category of the woman speaker in the poetry of Slovak poet Maša Haľamová (1908–1995). When analysing the narrative work of women poets, I use the term "woman speaker" instead of the more commonly used "female lyrical subject", as it is less semantically loaded than "lyrical subject" in Slovak literary studies and more clearly emphasises the poem’s narrative dimension. "Woman speaker" is defined as the feminine form of the term "speaker", i.e. the one who speaks in the poem and is part of the narrative structure of the poem. In the interpretations of three poems by M. Haľamová, the article applies the methods of literary narratology focused on lyric poetry. The core of the paper is an analysis of the position of the woman speaker in the context of modernist poetry, in the structure of the lyrical fictional world, especially with regard to the social situation of women at the time and their self-presentation in interaction with other characters. Methodologically, the article builds on the work of Miroslav Červenka and Lubomír Doležel in the field of narratology and the theory of fictional worlds. The aim is to show how the methods of literary narratology can be incorporated into traditional research on modernist poetry.
