Summary/Abstract: This article reflects on Štefan Krčméry's (1892–1955) essay “O poézii našich povestí” ([On the poetry of our legends] Slovenské pohľady 1928, published in book form in 1973), which is devoted to the poetics of fairy tales. The author probably wrote it as an occasional text and included it in the last issue of the magazine Slovenské pohľady, which he edited at the time, where it complemented a series of texts devoted to the collection and publication of fairy tales in Slovakia. The article has two main objectives: to examine the editorial treatment of Krčméry's essay in the publication Výber z diela VI [Selected works VI], which does not reflect the original publication context of the magazine version, and Krčméry's reception of the poetics of fairy tales, as it appears on the basis of this essay (taking into account his shorter, undated article Mýtus prostonárodný [The folk myth]). It focuses more closely on Krčméry's interpretation of the character of dragons in Slovak fairy tales, which at first glance appears to be a satirical text. The aim is to show and justify that it was not intended as a persiflage, and to identify and name the essence of Krčméry's interpretative method (literal reading, rejection of reading conventions).
