Summary/Abstract: Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum Bercht. & Presl. / synonym Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume) has been used for medicinal or cosmetic purposes since antiquity. The valuable characteristics of cinnamon include its distinct spicy aroma combined with its strong properties as an anti‑inflammatory agent and circulatory stimulant. These properties of cinnamon were already appreciated by the ancient Egyptian. Today’s laboratory tests suggest an effect that supports the treatment of diabetes. The paper aims at identifying parallels between historical medicinal uses of cinnamon bark and current laboratory test results that confirm its beneficial effect on the human body.
