The heritage of science and scientific collections: Polish resources. Outline of the issues

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses a range of aspects related to scientific heritage, its definition, content, and resources preserved in Polish museum collections. It is noted and justified that not all historical instruments (scientific, research, or educational) document the heritage of science. A prerequisite for such recognition is a multifaceted examination of the object, which allows a decision on the value and significance of the artefact for science. The beginnings of several of the world’s most important science and technology museums are briefly presented. Polish collections of measuring instruments are discussed, highlighting the most valuable scientific collections, including academic holdings.
