Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study was to compare the development level of the tourism function of villages located by lakes of the Masurian Lake District. Indicators of the tourism function (the Baretje-Defert index and the accommodation density index) were calculated for individual villages, together with indicators of the development of gastronomic and accompanying infrastructure, as well as indicators of the development of the aquatic part of the lakeshore zone. Significant differences were observed in the degree and type of tourism development in villages located in the western, central and eastern parts of the Masurian Lake District. The Great Masurian Lakes Trail, which includes Lake Śniardwy is a part, clearly shaped a different pattern of tourism development compared to villages situated around the other two lakes. Here, the accommodation facilities consisted mainly of camping sites and small guesthouses. At the same time, this area recorded the highest concentration of mooring facilities for watercraft. The main difference between the villages surrarounding the other two lakes was that those associated with Lake Dadaj had a much more developed tourism function than those around Lake Selmęt Wielki. The relatively high values of the pier density index in the villages by Lake Selmęt Wielki resulted from recreational infrastructure in the aquatic part of the shoreline, linked more to residential than tourism functions. The type of tourism infrastructure in all surveyed villages clearly indicated the dominance of lake-based tourism. Agrotourism in these lakeside villages was relatively marginal.
