Summary/Abstract: Communism, considering the number of victims, is the most criminal ideology. Societies that have experienced it, after freeing themselves from its influence, usually try to remove the remaining vestiges of communism from public space. Decommunisation manifests itself, for example, in the renaming of streets, squares, or buildings, and the removal of commemorations glorifying the communist system or its agents and activists. Against the background of the ongoing and often contested decommunisation in Poland, this case study focuses on the Upper Silesian Industrial District. The aim of the study was to examine the extent to which public space has been decommunised in this area. Documents from local and state administrations, statistical maps data, field observations, and media reports were used to determine the course of decommunisation in the investigated area, its results, as well as the conditions and specific characteristics of this case. Indirectly, this also brings us closer to answering the question of whether the communist system in Poland is a phenomenon that has truly become history.
