Public debt and economic growth in the economic and monetary union in the period 2006-2013

Summary/Abstract: The main aim of the article is to present the relationships between public debt and economic growth in the Economic and Monetary Union in the period 2006-2013. The article consists of two parts. The first part deals with theoretical analysis of the relationships between economic growth and public debt. The second part of the article examines the relationship between public debt and growth economy in the euro area. The paper verifies the hypothesis that the accumulation of public debt to GDP ratio is accompanied by a decline in the economic growth. In its final part the paper presents the latest economic forecasts in shaping the fiscal outlook and economic growth for the next two years. The article has been prepared based on Eurostat data. The calculations used a category of consolidated general government debt and GDP at market prices.
