Summary/Abstract: This study is devoted to the phenomenon of lake polynyas, which is little known in Polish scientific literature. It is the first paper to examine this unusual and intriguing occurrence. Polynyas are associated with the ice covers of lakes and are discussed here using the example of Morskie Oko in the Tatra Mountains. Drawing on field observations and photographic documentation, the study not only describes the phenomenon itself but also identifies its types, conditions and the reasons for its formation. The role of polynya in the functioning of the lake ecosystem is also indicated. Unlike the few Polish lakes mentioned in the literature, polynyas on Morskie Oko occur very rarely and are short-lived. No regularity is observed in their appearance at the same locations. However, certain zones where they appear most frequently can be identified – namely, the north-western part of Morskie Oko near the mountain hut, the mouth of Marchwiczny Żleb, and the outflow of Rybi Potok from the lake.
