Summary/Abstract: This study explores the historical process of the Union of the Ruthenians with the Roman Catholic Church, focusing on the Unions of Brest-Litovsk (1596) and Uzhhorod (1646) and the subsequent establishment of the Greek-Catholic Diocese of Munkács. It examines the theological, political, and cultural contexts that facilitated the integration of Eastern-rite believers into the Roman Church while preserving Byzantine-Slavic traditions. Drawing on archival and historiographical sources, the paper highlights the role of Jesuit missions, the influence of the Habsburg Empire, and the efforts of local clergy in shaping a unique religious identity within Central and Eastern Europe. The gradual canonical recognition of the Munkács Diocese illustrates the complex interplay between ecclesiastical diplomacy and imperial politics. Ultimately, this union represents a synthesis of Eastern spirituality and Western ecclesiastical structures that marked a pivotal moment in the history of Christianity in the Carpathian region.
