Summary/Abstract: Distinguished from the conventional understanding of asceticism and piety within the history of Sufism, the Kalenderi order left deep imprints on the religious and social fabric of Anatolia, particularly from the 13th century onwards. The political power vacuum and social chaos created by the Mongol invasion allowed this movement to find fertile ground in Anatolia. While the Kalenderi order is associated with its unassuming dervish communities that rejected all social norms and formal forms of worship, it also resonated in court and intellectual circles through Sufis of high intellectual caliber such as Shams-i Tabrizi and Fakhr al-Din alIraqi. During this period, Kalenderi dervishes also played a role in the political developments of the time through their relationships with the Mongol and Seljuk rulers.
