Summary/Abstract: This article presents the results of a survey among 948 adolescents (11-19 years old) in the city of Rome. The aim was to analyze and categorize the uses of the internet by Roman adolescents. After summarizing the results, three categories of users were distinguished in the data: normal users, users at risk of abuse/addiction to the internet (4% of the sample), and users with borderline risk of abuse/dependence on the internet (37.8% of the sample). The article provides the following profile of an adolescent addicted to the internet: a 13 year-old male, connects to the internet mainly at home and usually in his own room, generally uses the internet to participate in social networking and chatting, reports that his parents are interested in his presence in virtual space; possesses his own page on Facebook. This profile might be helpful in possible preventative measures against virtual threats to children and adolescents.
