Summary/Abstract: This article explores the political culture of the 19th century in the British Empire in order to explain the historical reasons that informed the Canadian choice to reject the political model offered by the American republic, and which illuminate the Canadian resistance to recent suggestions to join the United States. As early as the nineteenth century, the two political communities in North America developed national narratives and competing national identities that were articulated in political and cultural terms, rather than ethnic or religious ones, and built their institutional arrangements around competing definitions of liberty.
