Categorization (classification) of free-reed instruments

Summary/Abstract: Free-reed instruments are categorized/classified within the general instrumentarium. An approach to this is the sound production achieved by the vibration of an air stream. By this criterion, they are classified as wind instruments. The question then arises - what causes the vibration of the air stream? In some instruments, this is done by the mouth through breathing. In other cases, compression is applied to the bellows with the hands. The air stream under pressure sets metal reeds (voices) into vibration. This explanation clarifies that there are two criteria regarding the realization of the vibration, which also determine the classification of the instruments.
