Summary/Abstract: This text is dedicated to the history of domestic violence in Bulgaria. As a social problem, it was recognized by activists, researchers, and government officials just before the adoption of tailored legislation at the beginning of the new millennium, when the first discussions and specialized publications on it appeared. The article attempts to answer the question: did „domestic violence“ exist before it was outlined through special norms, before it became the target of the global crusade undertaken by the United Nations, the Council of Europe, and other influential international players? To this end, we systematize and present in organized form the accessible sources on the phenomenon in the country from the Liberation until the 1990s. The review shows, first, how violence is present in the history of the home, intimate partnership, and family. Second, it records the attitude of the state and society toward such acts. These are sometimes punished, often neglected, and in certain cases used as symptoms to draw the picture of other phenomena regarded as more significant and sensitive during a specific historical period.
