Summary/Abstract: The ar cle seeks to outline how the image of China and the Chinese na on has taken shapein the Polish consciousness. This process unfolded alongside the infl ux of elements of Chineseculture – both material and spiritual – into the Polish cultural sphere. The source materialconsists of an analysis of diaries and press content, supplemented with references to researchon stereotypes and on the use of names belonging to the thema c group Chiny, chiński, etc. Thelinguis c sec on reports the results of a lexicographic query concerning the Polish words Chiny‘China,’ Chińczyk ‘Chinese,’ chińszczyzna ‘Chinese cuisine/stuff ,’ and chiński ‘Chinese-ADJ.’ Theselexemes, along with their colloca ons, appear in both literal and fi gura ve meanings, whichindicates their assimila on into the Polish language.
