Summary/Abstract: The Transnistrian region constitutes a key area of interest for the study of frozen conflicts and post-Soviet security mechanisms. The peacekeeping mission, established following the 1992 ceasefire agreement, is of a hybrid nature, involving Russian forces alongside Moldovan and Transnistrian contingents. However, the predominant involvement of the Russian Federation raises significant concerns regarding impartiality and legitimacy, challenging the core principles of UN peacekeeping operations. The analysis further underscores the lack of effective monitoring and transparent reporting mechanisms, which undermines the overall credibility of the mission. The central finding is that the current configuration produces ambivalent outcomes: while it effectively ensures short-term stability, it falls short in promoting a sustainable and equitable resolution. The study argues for a reform of the mission’s framework, including its potential internationalization under the auspices of a multilateral organization, with the aim of transforming military stability into a genuine process of reconciliation and durable peacebuilding. This research seeks to assess the (in)effectiveness of peacekeeping operations within the specific political realities of eastern Moldova.
