Summary/Abstract: Mobility in cities is becoming one of the most critical factors determining the functioning and development of urban areas. Mobility is typically defined as the ability or capacity to move freely and easily; it can also be understood as a service, but also, in a relatively novel perspective, as a social, constitutive feature of space. Mobility, both experienced and performed, as well as imagined and potential, changes the way space is experienced, structured, and contested. One aspect of the cultural turn in communication geography is the perception of mobility as a cultural phenomenon, based on values, choices, and patterns. This mobility takes on characteristics that favour the preferred form of travel, such as walkability, cyclability, spaces promoting public transport, and automobility. It can be primarily a space focused on traffic capacity and transit, which most often results in the disintegration and division of space, or it can promote the integrity and cohesion of urban areas, as well as the permeability and connectivity of space. This article focuses on culturally conditioned conceptions of mobility and the culture and social practice of using space for movement. Particular emphasis is placed on the social characteristics of mobility spaces, considering choices and consequences, as well as expectations, value systems, meanings, and transportation social justice.
