Summary/Abstract: Augustin Paul (1866–1921) was a remarkable publicist, diplomat, and scholar from Sălaj, who transformed his train journeys into occasions for cultural reflection, social observation, and spiritual introspection. His writings, including the brochure “Between the Someș and the Prut” (1905) and articles published in “Gazeta Transilvaniei”, constitute genuine discourses on identity, culture, and civilization, as well as on the relationships among people of different nationalities and traditions. His travels became cultural experiences – through conversations with passengers of various nationalities, such as Romanians, Hungarians, Germans, or Jews. The scholar from Sălaj described with sensitivity the landscapes, people, and atmosphere of his era, capturing the contrasts between urban and rural spaces, and between tradition and modernity. Through these travel accounts, Augustin Paul illustrates the modern spirit of mobility and the use of the train experience as a means of self-knowledge.
