INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCE AND ITS ROLE IN THE HELPING PROFESSIONS

Summary/Abstract: Engagement in the helping professions involves constant interaction with difference - with people of diverse personal histories, backgrounds, perceptions, and beliefs, and increasingly, of different cultural affiliations and identities. This is why intercultural competence is essential for any well-prepared professional. This article focuses on defining this concept and exploring the process of its development through the systematic application of principles like (self-)reflection and lifelong learning. Based on interviews with field experts, the article analyzes common challenges encountered in social and psychological work with people from diverse cultures and outlines practical ideas and guidelines for addressing them.
