Summary/Abstract: The article presents the main features of the development of primary education in the Kanal Valley, with a focus on the role of the Slovenian language in the education system from the mid-igth century to the present day. During this period, it was crucially influenced by ethnic dynamics. Situated at the junction of the Germanic, Romance and Slavic worlds, the area is currently home to Italian and Friulan communities, alongside indigenous German and Slovenian populations. Over the last two centuries, various state, political and ideolog¬ical structures have emerged in the area that have paid particular attention to the school system. The article focuses on the challenges, difficulties and resistance that the Sloveni¬an language has faced within the education system from the formal establishment of the modern school system in the late 1860s to the present day. During this time, the Slovenian language underwent a process of gradual es¬tablishment in the school system, followed by restriction by the German national and political elites during the Austro-Hungarian period, subsequent prohibition during the Fascist Ital¬ian period, and finally reintegration into the education system after World War II - first in¬formally, through private courses, and, at the end of the 20th century, also formally through a gradual return to the public-school system.
