Gravestone inscriptions in the cemetery of Salonta

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to examine the semiotic and linguistic approach of the cemetery in Salonta from the following points of view: (a) which ethnic and religious expressive devices can be found on contemporary graves, (b) how the cemetery image is organized in relation to sacral and profane signs, (c) which devices are representative in the creation of various power plays in the cemetery, (d) which contributions can the cemetery in Salonta provide for cultural or cemetery tourism,(e) how the image of the cemetery reflects the results of the 2022 Romanian census in view of the interpretations of the symbols, (f) what interpretative potentials does the online presentation of the cemetery offer. From the answers to the above problematising questions, it is clear that the cemetery provides a perfect platform for tracing social – or even technical – changes in the municipality, as it is a faithful mirror of the processes taking place in the living world.
