Summary/Abstract: In this study, I present the animal names selected from the approximately 15,000 headwords in the database of the forthcoming Jókai Name Dictionary. The 107 literary animal names have been collected from 220 prose works. In the course of reviewing them, I account for the names of various animal species (dogs, horses, cats, birds, and other animals). I examine the types of names, explore the motivations behind the naming, and point out possible connections with the real names of animals that lived in Jókai’s environment. I also analyze names borrowed from different sources as well as those created by Jókai himself. Particular attention is given to instances where the same name appears in multiple works or where name changes occur. The primary aim of analyzing this well-structured corpus is to gain a deeper understanding of Jókai’s literary naming practices and, through this, to bring Jókai’s oeuvre closer to readers.
