Summary/Abstract: This literature review examines the role of postgraduate research intransforming the University of Namibia (UNAM) into a research-intensiveinstitution, with a focus on innovation and national development. Bysynthesizing existing literature, this paper explores global perspectives onresearch-intensive universities and reviews UNAM’s current research policiesand funding opportunities. It highlights challenges such as low research outputand inadequate funding and discusses strategies to enhance UNAM’s researchculture. The review aims to contribute to a discourse that could inform thedevelopment of a research framework for UNAM, aligning with Namibia’sVision 2030 goals for an industrialized, knowledge-based society. Researchintensive institutions like UNAM are essential for social change and nationalgrowth via knowledge production, but African universities suffer from poorresearch output, limited finance, and a weak research culture. Building astrong research culture and boosting UNAM's research performance requiresstrong leadership, government support, and improved research infrastructure. Therefore, UNAM should increase research funding, research infrastructure, and postgraduate participation to become a research-intensive institutionaligned with national development goals.
