Summary/Abstract: According to John Cage, silence provides an opportunity for another world to emerge. Since it involves only a simple “switch,” it is a gift that allows us to enjoy what we already have and what is around us. This concept of a silencing switch also applies to the visual arts, where established understandings and perceptions can be set aside. For instance, Liliana Zeic’s Portret Narcyzy Żmichowskiej (Portrait of Narcyza Żmichowska) was created as an assemblage of various ordinary materials. The ideas of practical material participation as expressed by Tim Ingold, the concept of material spirituality described by Elizabeth Anderson, and the exploration of identity through role-playing in Robin Bauer’s BDSM practices offer essential interpretive frameworks for this artwork dedicated to a queer writer who has been largely forgotten. Through an invented ritual that mutes prevailing knowledge, it becomes crucial to chart a path toward a world that is newly seen and understood.
