Summary/Abstract: Silence as a formal device in slow cinema opens up films of this genre to non-anthropocentricity. The absence of non-diegetic music and the limitation of dialogue lead to the creation of a special relationship between the viewer and the character, which the author calls silent introspection. It is based on empathetic distance, which is an attempt to understand the Other not through the representation of their internal states, but through being together in the face of its impossibility. Drawing on the achievements of posthumanism and soundscape studies and referring to selected slow cinema films (Memoria, Days, Le quattro volte), the author shows how silence allows non-human characters to exist in film without representational appropriation.
