Summary/Abstract: This article aims to outline the concept of quiet in the city in relation to its price, cost, and value, particularly when quiet is considered an ecosystem service. It asserts that the pervasive logic of the market influences how quiet and noise are perceived and discussed, ultimately shaping public policy decisions. Consequently, grassroots initiatives that advocate for quiet often struggle to create substantial systemic solutions to combat noise pollution. The commodification of quiet and the privatization of noise-related costs – dominant approaches in shaping urban soundscapes – are illustrated through examples of legal regulations, spatial planning practices, and local initiatives.
